Project 10 Pre-Work
Fine Art Portraits:
A fine art portrait is a photograph that uses different techniques to show the subject in different lights and to express some sort of mood or emotion.
Diane Arbus
I like this photo because it shows Diane Arbus in a natural position but it shows what she is doing and means something about her too. Her facial expression and the position she's in show somewhat who she really is.
Philippe Halsman
This is a famous portrait of Albert Einstein taken by Philippe Halsman. This is a fine art portrait because it does not have the aim to sell something. The portrait also shows something about Einstein as well. and the lighting and his position show this, as well as his facial expression.
Commercial Portraits:
A commercial portrait is a portrait with the aim to make the reader want to buy, use, or explore more about the subject. In other words, it is used to catch the viewer's attention for a certain purpose.
This is commercial because it shows the portrait of the woman, but then also a product to sell. It has the brand name as well as a picture of the product itself to sell.
This is again a portrait of Jennifer Aniston, holding the Smart Water. The water is highlighted with color, and everything else is black and white. This highlights the water and is obviously for commercial purposes.
Fine Art vs. Commercial
This is a fine art portrait with no products or anything highlighted to sell. The colors and her features are accented, not having any purpose of a sale of some product. This is a fine art portrait.
This is again a portrait of the same person, but there are products edited in to the photo, that highlight both the subject and the product to sell it for commercial purposes. This is a commercial portrait.
